Clearlake Woman Charged with First-Degree Murder for Fatal Shooting
On July 10, 2023, Dominique Irene Molina-Dominguez was taken into custody by authorities for fatally shooting 38-year-old DeAndre Grinner at her home on 16th Street in Clearlake, California. Molina-Dominguez had been lying in wait for Grinner, for whom the authorities believe she may have had a romantic relationship with. She has been charged with first-degree murder and three special allegations for Grinner’s shooting, including the personal and intentional use of a firearm and special aggravating circumstances that involve a crime that involved great violence and a weapon.
The Charges Against Molina-Dominguez
The most significant of the special allegations against Molina-Dominguez is that she believed to have been lying in wait for Grinner, which under California Penal Code Section 190.2(a)(15), is one of 22 special circumstances that qualify a defendant for the death penalty. However, the District Attorney’s Office has not yet expressed an intent to pursue the death penalty in this case.
Other special allegations against Molina-Dominguez include the intentional use of a firearm, specifically a rifle, and special aggravating circumstances that involve great violence and the use of a weapon.
The Murder of DeAndre Grinner
Despite authorities having charged Molina-Dominguez with first-degree murder, there has thus far been no disclosure of a possible motive for the murder. Friends and family have remembered Grinner as a “beautiful soul” who was kind and generous to those around him.
On July 10, 2023, authorities responded to a shooting at the Clearlake home where Grinner was fatally shot. Molina-Dominguez reported the shooting to the police. When officers arrived at the scene, Molina-Dominguez was standing outside the residence and she told them that she had shot Grinner.
Molina-Dominguez did not have the weapon with her when police arrived, but there was a gun located within the home. Authorities are still working to determine if the firearm located within the home was the weapon used in the shooting.
Court Appearances and Further Investigations
Molina-Dominguez has made two court appearances so far but has not entered a plea in the case. She is currently being held on $1 million bail. During her latest court appearance, a continuance was requested without entering a plea, and the hearing has since been continued to August 6, 2023.
Court records have shown that Molina-Dominguez has a previous conviction for drug charges and a traffic infraction. Grinner also had a case filed against him earlier this month in Lake County Superior Court for burglary and receiving stolen property, while previous cases had been filed against him in Sonoma County for carjacking and kidnapping.
Investigators are still working to determine whether there were additional witnesses to the shooting, and whether there was a previous history of domestic violence between Molina-Dominguez and Grinner.
Conclusion
This tragic case raises important questions around domestic violence and the use of firearms in the commission of violent crimes. The authorities must continue to investigate fully to ensure that justice is served for all involved.
